Bangladesh finally ended their long wait for glory against India in a final, securing the SAFF Under-20 Championship title with a thrilling 4-3 victory in a penalty shootout.

The match, held at the National Stadium in Male, Maldives, ended goalless after regulation time before Bangladesh held their nerve in the shootout.

The decisive moment came from US-based forward Ronan Sullivan, who confidently executed a stunning Panenka penalty. His clever chip fooled Indian goalkeeper Suraj Singh, sparking jubilant celebrations among Bangladeshi players and fans in the stands.

This victory carried extra significance as it mirrored the heartbreak of the 2025 final, where India defeated Bangladesh by the same 4-3 margin in penalties. This time, however, Bangladesh reversed the outcome to claim the title.

Captain Mithu Chowdhury expressed his joy after the win, saying the team had been chasing this achievement for four years. He also praised the passionate support from expatriate Bangladeshi fans throughout the tournament.

Goalkeeper Ismail Hossain Mahin played a crucial role in the shootout, saving India’s opening penalty taken by Rishi Singh. He later described the save as an emotional moment, feeling as though he had protected the hopes of millions back home. Bangladesh started the shootout strongly, with Murshed Ali, Chandon Roy, and Abdul Riyad Fahim converting their penalties. However, Samuel Raksam missed his chance after hitting the crossbar, bringing the score level again.

India failed to capitalize, as Omang Dodum sent his shot wide, paving the way for Ronan’s historic winner. The final itself was closely contested, with both teams battling evenly across 90 minutes. India created more chances but failed to convert, while Bangladesh remained resilient in defense.

Head coach Mark Cox made one change to the lineup from the semifinal, bringing in Abdul Riyad Fahim in defense. Both teams started cautiously, though India produced the first real opportunity early on. Bangladesh responded with chances of their own, including a near miss from captain Mithu.

The game remained tightly fought, especially in midfield, with neither side able to break the deadlock. In the second half, India increased pressure, but Bangladesh’s defense held firm, forcing the match into penalties.
